Retirement-Transition Issues Take Center Stage in St. Petersburg, Florida

First-ever Third Age Life Planning conference unites life-coaches, advocacy groups, and corporate interests on a common platform to help boomers navigate life's third age

St. Petersburg, Fla. - December 3, 2007 - The Life Planning Network (LPN), a New England-based organization and network of professionals dedicated to helping mature adults plan for and navigate their pre- and post-retirement years, will hold the first-ever "Third Age Life Planning: A Holistic Approach" conference at Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, Fla., on December 5 and 6, 2007.

The event, which precedes the "Beyond the Cutting Edge, National Positive Aging Conference" also hosted by Eckerd College, will assemble many of the nation's leading authorities on baby boomers and "third-life" issues for a dialogue on how to best address the multitude of opportunities and challenges facing the nation's 76 million baby boomers as they transition to this new life phase.

The event will feature presentations and panel discussions led by the renowned likes of:

  • Gene Cohen, M.D., Ph.D. and author of The Mature Mind: The Positive Power of the Aging Brain and The Creative Age: Awakening Human Potential in the Second Half of Life and director of the Center on Aging, Health and Humanities at George Washington University.
  • Helen Dennis, faculty member at the Andrus Gerontology Center at the University of Southern California and editor of two books, Retirement Preparation and Fourteen Steps in Managing an Aging Work Force and author of the weekly "Successful Aging" column for the Daily Breeze.
  • Richard J. Leider, co-author of Repacking Your Bags and Claiming Your Place at the Fire.
  • William A. Sadler, Ph.D. and director of research at The Center for Third Age Leadership, author of The Third Age and the forthcoming Changing Course: A Cure for the Common Retirement (with James Kreft).

LPN President Betsy Cole says, "As a generation, baby boomers will live longer, have more opportunities, face different challenges and, perhaps, more uncertainty than prior generations. That's what this conference is all about - bringing together the nation's thought leadership on the full spectrum of later life issues to better prepare those professionals on the front lines of helping boomers face and embrace the retirement stage."

The event is co-sponsored by SecurePathSM by Transamerica, a service from Transamerica Retirement Management, Inc. established to provide retirement-transition tools, guidance, strategies and products to pre-retirees. According to Will Prest, chief marketing officer of the division, "We share a common philosophy with the Life Planning Network that pre-retirees need to take a much broader look at this third age of life and that the financial aspect, while critical, is just one of many vital aspects of retirement. With so many financial services companies focused almost exclusively on financial preparedness, we are taking a different path to helping pre-retirees prepare for this transition and are delighted to be a part of an event that embraces that approach."

Other conference supporters include AARP, American Society on Aging, Gloria Cavanaugh Consulting, Civic Ventures, Elderhostel, Generations United, National Center for Creative Aging, National Council on Aging, NRTA-AARP's Educator Community, Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes National Resource Center, and Publix Supermarkets.
