Regardless at what age you decide to retire, it is important to sign up for Medicare approximately three months before your 65th birthday. You can sign up for Medicare even if you do not plan to retire at age 65.

If you are already getting Social Security retirement benefits, you will be contacted a few months before you become eligible for Medicare and given the information you need.

You will be enrolled in Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance) automatically, but because you pay a premium for Part B coverage, you have the option of turning it down.

After you are enrolled in Medicare, you will receive a Medicare card indicating whether you have Part A, Part B, or both. You will also receive a Medicare Handbook which outlines your Medicare plan choices and benefits.

Medicare has a Web site at www.medicare.gov and a toll-free number at 1-800-MEDICARE. Social Security offices and their 800 number (800.772.1213) also offer information, and replacement Medicare cards can be obtained on the Social Security Web site.
